Digital Substrobe DS51

Ikelite DS 51

The compact, lightweight and affordable Ikelite DS51 Substrobe is an excellent choice for any underwater photographer. Its digital electronics make it fully compatible with digital cameras as well as traditional film cameras such as the Nikonos.
The DS51’s intensity and angle of coverage make it equally suited for macro and general photography. The strobe’s wide-angle diffuser increases the angle-of-coverage up to 80 degrees, softens the light and helps to reduce backscatter. The strobe can easily switch between TTL/Auto and any of the six (6) manual power settings for complete control over lighting the subject. The DS51 Substrobe’s power rivals strobes twice its size, recycles in a quick 3.5 seconds, and provides 200+ flashes on a set of batteries. Much shorter recycle times and more flashes per set of batteries can be realized during TTL operation or when using manual fractional powers.
When connected with a sync cord to Ikelite TTL housings, TTL adapters, or the Nikonos camera system, the DS51 Substrobe offers TTL and Manual Modes. When used with other manufacturers housings, the DS51 Substrobe can only be used in the Manual Mode utilizing the six selectable power settings. When used in conjunction with the EV-Controller, the DS51 Mode switch is set to the TTL setting and the EV-Controller provides ten power settings in half-stop increments.
NEW! As of October 1, 2009, a clear battery door provides an unobstructed view of the o-ring seal for aid in assembly. The clear battery door assembly #9440.45 is also available for purchase separately to carry as a spare or update older strobes.
The #4044.1 DS51 includes a removable flash diffuser. A variety of strobe mounts and complete arms are available separately to attach to most camera systems. An optional #9571.4 mount with 1″ (2.5cm) diameter ball allows you to build a custom arm or attach the strobe to TLC or Ultralight arm systems. Optional #9440.8 standard mount with through bolt attaches the strobe to Ikelite Strobe Arms Is and II (featuring tube arm components).
Complete strobe packages with strobe, arm, charger, and either sync cord or EV manual controller provide everything you need to add an external flash to your system.

For over 30 years Ikelite has been the leader of innovation of underwater strobe lighting. We are proud to introduce the first strobe that meets the challenge presented by today’s sophisticated “hybrid” cameras.
The DS161 Movie Substrobe combines all of the functionality of our renowned DS160 with a powerful 500 lumen LED video light. This strobe is everything you need for stunning photos and video.
Strobe Coverage
Professional photographers all over the world prefer the wide and even coverage of our specially made circular flashtubes. The slightly warm color temperature provides rich, natural tones for beautiful macro, portraits and landscapes.
Strobe Compatibility
The DS161 Movie Substrobe is compatible with all Ikelite TTL systems and current digital cameras, as well as all older TTL film cameras including the Nikonos system. A variety of sync cords, sensors, and TTL adapters are available to connect to almost any camera system currently on the market.
Strobe Power
The DS161 recycles in a quick 1.5 sec from full discharge. When fired at a fractional power — whether in TTL or manual mode — the strobe recycles virtually instantaneously. Number of flashes per full charge will increase dramatically in most cases when using in TTL mode with a compatible camera system. The powerful DS161 is adjustable in 10 half-stop increments for precise control over your exposure when used in manual mode.
Movie Light Coverage
Three super-bright LEDs are arranged behind a special optical element to provide 45 degrees angle of coverage free of hotspots. The daylight balanced color temperature brings out true, natural colors with or without the use of a color correcting filter.
Movie Light Modes
With the strobe set to the “Batt w/Lite” position, the movie light is adjustable from 100% down to 50% power in 10 fractional power settings. An “SOS” mode emits the universal signal for help in emergency situations.

With the strobe set to the “On w/Lite” position, the movie light doubles as an aiming light for focusing or night diving. The light automatically dims to an imperceptible level when the strobe fires so there is no effect on photos.
Movie Light Burn Time
Custom circuitry and highly efficient drivers provide 5 hours of continuous burn time on a fully charged battery with no waning effects. Continuous use of the light at full power reduces number of full power flashes by less than 15%.
Accessories
The #4061 DS161 comes standard with rechargeable NiMH battery pack and flash diffuser. The NiMH battery pack requires #4066.1 Smart Charger, not included. A variety of strobe mounts and arms are available for attachment to almost any system.

The DS161 accepts the same #4066.5 NiMH module used on our DS125 and DS160 Substrobes. If you intend to use an older battery pack on your new Substrobe, please read this Important Notice regarding these batteries.

Complete strobe packages bundle everything you need to add a DS161 to your camera system and get in the water!

The AutoFlash sensor is positioned to provide the most reliable strobe triggering possible without exposed cables which require maintenance and can tangle or break.
Ergonomic styling.
Two large, easy to read dials provide all of the settings necessary for control of the flash system. The AF35 strobe rear dial features OFF, Auto (TTL) plus six Manual Power settings. The AutoFlash sensor rear dial provides simple plus/minus EV exposure compensation in the Auto (TTL) mode.
The system’s comfortable rubberized grip and neutral buoyancy make it a pleasurable addition to any housing. A flexible arm system allows quick repositioning of the strobe angle and adds no weight to the system.
Clear compatibility.
The AF35 AutoFlash kit comes standard with everything needed to attach to Ikelite ULTRAcompact housings, some Ikelite Compact Digital housings (see camera chart) as well as most OEM housings from Olympus, Canon, Sony and Panasonic.
The AutoFlash wireless TTL system is compatible with any camera which emits a pre-flash sequence (i.e. Most digital cameras produced in the past few years. Canon compact cameras emit a pre-flash sequence in all camera modes except “M” manual mode.)
The AF35 kit tray features two 12-24 mounting points spaced 3″ apart for attachment to Ikelite housings. A central 1/4-20 tripod mounting point allows attachment to most non-Ikelite compact housings. Anti-rotation adapter plates are included for use with Olympus, Sony or Canon housings. Other brand housings are un-tested and may exhibit rotation on the tray.
